In the most parts of the world, the first choice of people who want to buy a pickup truck is, Toyota Hilux. But if you want something more fuel economical yet a tad sportier, go for all-new 2015 Mitsubishi L200.
The production of the fourth generation L200 – also known as Hunter, Sportero, Strada, or Triton, depending on where you live – has been put to an end. This model, after 9 years of production and 1.3 million units made, has left behind a strong legacy that the new model has to carry on. But the question is, why is the fifth generation Mitsubishi L200 such a great deal, is it the diesel engine or the overall look?
Meet the SUT
Mitsubishi is calling its new pick up the “Sports Utility Truck”, it’s a bold statement which can clearly be seen in its overall design. The J-Line architecture has been flawlessly integrated into the new L200 Double Cab while the design has got smoother arches and sharper lines.
Diesel engine with two outputs
The all-new Mitsubishi L200 is powered by 2.4 litre DI-D turbocharged diesel engine, in two power outputs: first is the basic 154bhp producing 280 lb-ft of torque, it is mated with a manual cog swapper six-speed gearbox, second one is the 180 bhp unit that churns out 317 lb-ft and can be mated with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic AISIN box.
Although there haven’t been any detailed fuel consumption ratings revealed by Mitsubishi but it has been said that it will do 44mph (6.4 l/100 km) on average, but that’s only when you are “on the road”, off-road with air-conditioning will bring the figures down to 30 mpg (9.4 l/100 km).
What else is offered?
The top model offers features like touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, tinted windows, rear-view camera, gear shifter, leatherette wrapped steering wheel, depth adjustable steering wheel with shortcut buttons, lane departure warning, leather upholstery, auto headlamps, electric mirrors and paddle shifters with Sport mode.
What’s interior like?
The interior has been made more comfortable and the rear legroom, by reshaping all the seats, has been extended to a great extent. A great deal of technological amenities has been added along with the use of more sound insulating materials. The dashboard now features some silver accents while the centre console and door armrests get some gloss black panels. The durability has been achieved by the use of hard plastics in grey/black colour, designed to be easily cleaned.
