These engines are seriously selected with due care because automakers use the trophies won from Ward awards to motivate their team of engineers to invent and bring new technologies. Engineers then strive for best performance motors with higher power ratios, lower internal frictions, reduced weights and ultimately improved combustion and definitely lower carbon footprints.

The editor at Wards Auto said that there is nothing wrong with these automakers but in the new list of engines they are selecting cars under $61,000 price cap and there is no cars available in the USA from these automakers that fit under this description.

Volkswagen 1.8-litre engine with four cylinders has been removed from the list for the next year just because the experts have evaluated almost 35 new or improved engines and powertrains before launching the new list for 2016. The new list of winners for 2016 will be announced on 10th of December.
Any other reasons to eliminate VW engines?
