Cheshire production line received the honour of producing that five millionth vehicle
Yesterday was a historic moment for Vauxhall as they produced five millionth vehicle at their legendary production line at Ellesmere Port factory which rolled off after lunchtime. The significance of this production line is evident from the numbers it produced in the span of 50 years, which include 3.7 million Astras, 2.6 million Chevettes and one million Vivas. The celebrations were on when a Vauxhall Astra hatchback – the five millionth car – made its way out of the line never Liverpool at lunchtime.
The services of a professional stunt driver Paul Swift were acquired to make the occasion historic. This whole event was filmed and released so everyone should know the illustrious history of the plant.
You can see in these videos how Ellesmere Port pulls handbrake turns, make smoky burnouts out of an original Vauxhall Viva and many more including 1975 Firenza HP Droopsnoot, Chevette HS2300, Mk1 Astra GTE, Mk3 Astra GSI and an Astra CDTi of modern ages.
This news of achieving five million car milestone will definitely provide an extra boost to over 1,800 workers at Ellesmere Port who made it possible to build a new car in just two minutes. Thanks to the £140 million investment by GM, the factory will be hiring an additional 300 staff.
In 2009, when the existing Vauxhall Astra started its sale, it hasn’t looked back selling well over 54,000 examples year-to-date, thus becoming the fifth best-selling car of 2014. By the looks of it, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration if Vauxhall finish the year in high numbers, going ahead of all the new models due by the middle of 2015.
This facility produces Sports Tourer Estate and five-door hatchback models and interestingly almost 76 per cent of its total production volume is exported.
