The Audi A4 Avant is as good as the A4 saloon and the cabriolet, but is it as good as the BMW 3 Series Touring?
If someone asks who are the titans of the compact executive cabriolet car class, the answer would be: Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Every single one of them has a product that can be compared to each other. This new model is powered by a frugal diesel engine in Ultra specification, capable of producing lower CO2 emissions.
Who will be taking on?
The old A4 Avant somehow managed to become a bit-part player of this trio, but it did feel left behind and outdated then. Everything has changed now. The new Audi A4 Avant may not look entirely different from its predecessor, but it really has got all-new ‘weapons’ to fight back. It will be going on sale in November and will be facing the C-Class Cabriolet from the Mercedes and the 3 Series Tourer from the BMW, introduced last year and a couple of months ago respectively.
The new A4 Avant, when compared to the old one, is longer and wider, offering more interior space than its competitors. It is also lower, lighter and brings better agility and greater efficiency.
What kind of engine does it have?
It is powered by state-of-the-art Audi diesel engines offered in two outputs: 148bhp and a 187bhp 2.0-litre. If you opt for the 2.0-litre diesel engine with 187bhp in Ultra specifications, you’ll be getting an engine which produces lower CO2 emissions than the engine it has replaced.
The claimed economy is up to 68.9mpg, and the best thing is that it stays the same on both, the six-speed manual gearbox or the optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The 187bhp diesel engine is the second best seller after the 148bhp unit. In most of the situations, it drives pretty well but when overtaking on faster roads, it lags.
From the inside, what does A4 Avant like?
The simple answer would be, quite astounding. And perhaps the game change trait of A4 Avant is the level of perceived quality, the feel it gives is exactly the same as given by Audi’s most expensive vehicles. All the gadgetry inside not only look good, but they feel solid too, once you start pushing, and playing with the buttons.
Audi’s all models include the MMI infotainment and a 7.0in screen, from mid-level Sport trim upwards gets sat-nav as standard.
