Turbo engines are taking over the naturally aspirated and much loved “atmo” engines of BMW engine line-up
BMW has developed and introduced some of the best naturally aspirated BMW engines of all times. It has a long list of high revving, powerful and high-spirited naturally aspirated engines from four, six, twelve, and V-type cylinder guises.
BMW models always used some best of the best technologies to toying with the emotions of the drivers where they move the soundtrack pitches from one level to another and makes it more emotional when metallic shriek connect to the exhausts but now they are gone.
BMW officialssays thatless cylinders produced less friction and the same is the case in lower revving engines. On other hand turbo engines offer high torque coming from very low revs and available for very broad speed range to outperform the naturally aspirated engines.
Why turbo engines are taking over the naturally aspirated engines? There are five very strong reasons that experts are agreed upon.
1- Euro emission standards are one of the reasons that EU has set a vision for 2020 to maintain the carbon emissions in European Union. Euro VI standard allows CO2 emissions of 95g/km. to accomplish this target, automakers need some extra power and torque from fuel economical engines. There is only possibility to attain the higher power levels from small engines, the turbochargers.
2- Emission levels for diesel burners also has regulation standards Euro I-IV. These standards basically force the automakers to install the turbochargers on the diesel engines to improve the performance.
3- Downsizing of engines is also a need of automakers, why use a V6 if the same power can be acquired from a small four-cylinder engine with a turbocharger.
4- Fuel consumptions are also one of the big concerns for every engine maker, reducing fuel consumption will offer two benefits at the same time, one is big savings and the other is low carbon emissions. Engines with turbochargers offer greater torques at lower engine revs that naturally aspirated engines cannot offer.
5- The higher demands for SUVs needs more powerful engines with smaller sizes, naturally aspirated engines cannot deliver it
