Combined power of combustion engine and electric motor will give you a driving experience of your life
If you want to have a look at the future of GTI, then we suggest you must take a look at the 2016 VW Golf GTE. This new super-hot hatch has been built on the original Golf GTI.
The Golf GTE has been into production for quite some time now, contains the same engine and has already been on sale in Europe.
Is it the same as the Golf GTI?
Absolutely not. When you look at the GTE Sport, you would hardly believe your eyes that it was built on the Golf.
Just look at the headlamps, they are brilliantly shaped to give the front an alien-like look and feel. And that’s one of those many features specially designed to increase the aerodynamics of the car. To open the doors, you have to swing them upwards. The use of carbon fibre was a brilliant choice as it shaved off plenty of curb weight.
What kind of engine is powering it?
This kind of car requires some special treatment, so Volkswagen has fitted in a VW Polo R WRC rally car powertrain in it. Yes! That’s right a 1.6 litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine which develops 395 bhp and 494 lb-ft of torque.
The top speed of Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport is 174 mph and it takes only 4.3 seconds for a sprint to 62 mph from the stand still.
What about the electric motors? Does it have one?
No, it does not have one electric motor, rather to your surprise, this one features two electric motors. Incorporated into a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, one motor powers the front wheels while the other one powers the rear wheels.
